Turn your classroom into a space for impact 🌱
The streams that cross our fields, the wetlands that support biodiversity, the lakes that sustain tourism, the rivers that connect communities, and the groundwater that supports agriculture all form part of the same water system that eventually reaches the ocean. This is why the BlueLightS Third Call for Blue Challenges in European Schools presents an opportunity not only for coastal schools, but also for rural schools seeking to connect learning with real-world environmental challenges. The call provides grants of up to €3,000 for creative, hands-on projects that bring Ocean and Water Literacy to life. Projects may explore:
💧 Freshwater and marine biodiversity
💧 Pollution and microplastics
💧 Climate change and water systems
💧 Sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and renewable energy
💧 Active citizenship and environmental awareness
Schools are encouraged to engage students through citizen science, field investigations, storytelling, arts, digital media, and community action projects. Activities can run for just 2–3 months, making them easy to integrate into the school year. For rural schools, this is an opportunity to help learners understand how local water stewardship contributes to broader environmental resilience—from protecting rivers and wetlands to supporting sustainable agriculture and nature-based tourism. Healthy oceans begin upstream.
